I am sure you will agree with me, that our music, particularly the way it is presented, has gone through sea change over the last decade. On the one hand the audience is asking for instant sensual gratification. On the other, the musicians, in their eagerness to play to the gallery are packaging their renderings with glitzy and attractive wrappers of speed and technical adroitness. The outcome, more often than not is expression that is shorn of soulfulness – an essential element of music that is of Indian origin.
The music, unlike that of yester years, does not linger anymore. The momentary sensual pleasure that the audience derives is short-lived as they go soul-starved, looking for fulfillment. This is how, if you notice, our music, which is believed to have been derived from and meant for connection with Divinity, is gradually becoming a commodity. Interestingly, most aspiring musicians / students are also now looking to be trained with tips and techniques for getting rich and famous, quickly and many teachers too are obliging them with the same.
Swaratma, a not-for-profit initiative, is here to transform the way Indian music is being presented, taught and learnt. The initiative has been unequivocally endorsed musicians of the like of Pandit Ajay Pohankar, Dr. Ashwini Bhide, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pandit Subhankar Banerjee and Pandit Tejendra Majumdar. We are also extremely fortunate to have the blessings of Srimati Annapurna Devi.
One of the key areas of focus is to expose the audience to Indian music in a manner that they find the sensual pleasure they are looking for and at the same time feel deeply fulfilled by upholding its soul and essence. The way we intend to go about doing this is to hold thematic multi-city concerts, demonstrating the all-pervasiveness of our music.
The first of these concerts, which also happens to be a launch of Swaratma in Bangalore is on October 14, 2017 where we will be featuring Swaratmik musician and also facilitate debut performance of two of our blossoming musician in morning-evening concerts.
