When I close my eyes I imagine a school, which is a safe place for the kids, where kids are joyful owners of their knowledge, learnings and potential responsible citizen of society. I am Arun Sharma, a Teach for India Fellow. I teach 44 kids in Shahpur, Ahmedabad in a school run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). My 5th graders are immensely eager to learn and can do anything if provided an opportunity to explore this world of possibilities. It is saddening that the sole purpose of the education system has just shifted towards getting high scores resulting in unhealthy competition. All these thoughts push me as a fellow, about my role during fellowship or may be after it.
My kids come from a community near the school that suffers majorly from hygiene issues. There is garbage thrown all over and the issue of open defecation is very rampant there. These directly affect the education of the children as they or their family member often fall sick. Many of my children are first generation learners in their family therefore naturally their parents have very less awareness of the importance of education or the investments they have to make to provide them with opportunities.
Since hygiene was a dire issue in their community, during my first year with kids I have constantly focused on how cleanliness and proper sanitation is required for a healthy physical and mental growth. I prepared my kids to take actions towards self and surrounding hygiene not just inside the school, but outside the school as well.
Our school is in great need of proper toilet facility for the children, separate for boys and girls. We need to provide proper water supply to the toilets. We also need to provide drinking water facility for children, since clean drinking water is absolutely missing from our school. Ahmedabad is a place which is usually hot and dry. So, drinking water is a great need in the school. This is where you can contribute in providing my children a safe environment for learning.
You can help in making my kids provide exceptional opportunities which will in turn nurture them as future leaders of our country. Your support is key to solving this problem. Don’t be hesitant about the sum donated. What matters is your effort to make these kids shine.
I am looking forward to raising Rs. 100,000 to help me build a proper toilet, bring in drinking water facility in the school, and procure books for the school.
I thank you in advance for your support! Any amount of contribution means a lot to me and my children. Help us make our school better.
