Hello everyone! I am Thirupathi, a software professional, my wife is a Pathologist. We have two lovely children a nine-year-old boy and a girl aged four years. Our lives went on smoothly until last July when suddenly my son started complaining of severe headaches. We thought that it could be due to some strain.
One day my son's teacher called from school saying that he had severe headaches and vomiting. We rushed to the school and saw our son in a pathetic situation. He was totally drained out. Then we started investigating his headache and were shocked to know that my son has a brain tumor. We immediately took him to KIMS hospital, Secunderabad. The doctor suggested surgery to remove the tumor. However as my son is very sensitive, we thought to try various other modes of treatment. We also visited all the temples and prayed everywhere for him. He had no symptoms for about two months. We were happy for God's blessings. But again in the month of October, he had severe headache and vomiting. Then we took an MRI and it showed an increase in the size of the tumor. This time the doctor suggested a biopsy and ventriculostomy in order to release the pressure in his brain which was causing the headache. He underwent a biopsy and the tumor was diagnosed as Pineoblastoma a very rare tumor of the brain. It is classified as a Grade IV tumor (a high growth tumor). The chances of having a Pineoblastoma among all brain tumors is 0.1%. Such was the fate of our 9-year old.
Doctor suggested for immediate radiotherapy. We enquired everywhere and finally found that Proton therapy (a variant of radiotherapy) will give the best results for my son with lesser side effects and a 50% lesser chance of recurrence. We approached Apollo Proton Cancer Care in Chennai which offers Proton therapy. The doctor at Apollo Proton investigated further and said that the tumor has further grown in size by 0.6 cm. Now, the tumor growth is doubling every day. The doctor advised that the best results will be obtained if the tumor is surgically removed first followed by proton therapy and chemotherapy.
We were terrified at this moment. We didn’t want our son to go under the knife for the second time. This surgery is an intense one and there are risks associated which we didn’t even want to talk about. However, we didn’t have an option. On December 11, 2019, we got the surgery done. It was a tough time convincing him to undergo a surgery where we ourselves were terrified of it. Fortunately, the surgery went well and we cannot thank Doctor and his team enough for all they have done.
Post surgery, my son realised that he underwent a surgery and was terrified to even move. His fear of pain along with multiple recurrence of fever for the next 10 days affected his recovery and took more time than we expected. He started walking out of his bed only after 25 days post surgery.
As advised by the doctor, we had to get the Proton therapy done immediately. The MRI was taken again and what is revealed is something that we were dreading all the while. Tumour has already spread to two other sites in the brain. Doctors advised chemotherapy along with radiotherapy.
My son had a dream to take an award from the school principal for 100% attendance. But ever since he is unwell, he couldn't go to school. He cries in the middle of the night that he couldn't fulfill his dream. He misses his school and friends a lot. He is getting depressed with his inability to do anything for his age. His teachers came home to console him with a greeting card prepared by his friends where each of his friends wrote that they are missing him. My son took tears in his eyes upon seeing the card. His dream is to become a space scientist in the future. But now he cries every day that he is not able to make it as he is not going to school. Though we explain and try to convince him, he is getting depressed.
My 4-year old daughter is not able to see her brother suffering. She says that she will take his headache and make him healthy and happy.
As both my wife and I are taking care of our son, we gave a break to our careers. To cover for my son's initial surgeries we have put all our savings and borrowed from our friends and families. Now we are finding it difficult to cover even daily expenses. This proton therapy determines the future of my son and his dreams. We cannot have it any other way.
We are now looking for some divine help to pull us out of this life threatening situation. We would need RS.30 lakhs to get our son the Proton therapy. I do not know who you are but if you can contribute for my son, you are not just a donor but a life saver. I urge you to please help us with any fund you can and give my son a new life.
I thank you in advance from the bottom of my heart and I bless you for any help you extend.
