Latest Update

Dear Donors,

Thank you for your generosity and your contribution to Magic Bus’ COVID-19 relief efforts. Your support helped us distribute dry ration kits and cooked meals to over 300,000 people living in poverty across 23 States of India. Our ration kits included rice, grain, pulses, turmeric, oil, and soaps for bathing and washing. These families have lost all sources of income during the COVID-19 lockdown affecting their ability to eat even two meals a day. Your support has ensured they do not go hungry.

Apart from distributing dry ration kits and cooked meals, we have also built their awareness about COVID-19 and the different ways in which they can keep themselves safe. Our awareness-building initiatives were keeping in mind the severe space constraints that most families living in slum clusters experience.

Your contribution has helped us move closer to our goal of providing 57,000 families with 1.8 crore meals for a month. Thank you for supporting Magic Bus’ relief efforts to reach out to the most vulnerable in order to protect them from hunger and disease.

Story

Magic Bus works with lakhs of children, young people and their families across 22 States of India. Our children and their communities are facing a terrible risk, exacerbated by loss of livelihoods and incomes, lack of awareness about COVID-19, and inability to undertake and access prevention measure. We urge each of you to DONATE NOW to help these children and communities PREVENT, PROTECT, and PERSEVERE through this pandemic.

With your donation, we can fast track relief efforts to the most vulnerable in India. Here's how:

PREVENT

1. We will build awareness about COVID-19 among the hardest-to-reach communities, ensure they recognize symptoms and report to local government authorities whenever such symptoms occur.

2. We will help communities adopt hygienic practices, learn thorough handwashing techniques, use masks or cover their face while sneezing or coughing, and adopt social distancing.

PROTECT

1. We will ensure basic essentials like food, soaps, and masks reach those who have no means to afford them.

2. We will ensure communities remain connected to government health provisions and advisories.

3. We will ensure proper training and usage of protection measures like gloves, masks and sanitisers for our frontline staff.

PERSEVERE

1. We will conduct Needs Assessment studies to map out the areas that require more assistance to tide over this crisis. Our relief efforts will be customised according to the needs of the communities.

The Unstoppable,

At a time when the world is challenged by an unfamiliar and fatal virus, what can actually work to keep us afloat? It is a belief that there is light at the end of this tunnel.

With that belief, a bunch of young leaders are reaching out to their neighbours and lending a helping hand. They are unstoppable because of their courage and resilience. They are also all around you.

Meet Ashwitha, our Youth Mentor from Mysore.

She lives in Ramabainagar. Her community is made up mostly of migrant workers, who travel three days a week to construction sites. Following the month-long lockdown, almost all of them lost their jobs. None of them had a BPL card to avail of the government benefits during the lockdown.

“The Gram Panchayat members in my area know Magic Bus for several years now. They also know me for my work with children in the neighbourhood.I have been a Youth Mentor in Magic Bus for the last eight years,”Ashwitha says.

The Gram Panchayat members wanted Ashwitha’s support to prepare and distribute cooked meals to people who were starving because they had no money to buy food. Ashwitha took charge of the entire initiative from the first day, mobilizing support from the young people, and volunteering to cook the food herself.

“I was very scared at first. I have a child at home. My husband has lost his job too. I didn’t want to get infected and pass it on to my family. We are all holed up together in a single room through the day,” she says, adding, “I also knew if I didn’t take the initiative people in my locality would starve, children would go without food.

So I took it up. I ensure I have a mask and gloves and sanitizers on me. I leave home early in the morning and when I come back, I head straight to the bathroom to wash my hands and clothes,” she explains.

Today is the 10th day of food distribution in Ramabainagar. “We feed 600-800 people in a day. Members of the Gram Panchayat fund procurement of ration. We plan to do this for another 10 days,” she says with a smile.
