As a simple laborer, I may not have wealth or luxury, but I'd move heaven and earth for my children. So when after 18 years of hoping for a daughter, we were finally blessed - I was overjoyed… Nothing could have prepared us for what the doctors said next…
My name is Ramesh. We are a family of four from Khargone, Madhya Pradesh. My wife, our elder son, our newborn daughter Lavya, and I live in this bare concrete home. Because we have never wanted much, we didn’t feel like we were missing out on anything either.
3 months ago, our baby Lavya was born. The doctors refused to hand us the baby as she was in critical condition. When up close, we saw that there was a sac on her back, we felt shocked and confused. What was this Spina Bifida? And why did our innocent little baby have it?
Doctors explained that Myelomeningocele is the most serious type of Spina Bifida. That this huge sac was made up of her nerves, tissue and spinal cord. She was at risk of a serious infection or Hydrocephalus affecting her brain - or both.
We understood little except two things. Our baby’s life was in danger and we needed enough to get her treatment started as soon as possible. The symptoms didn’t wait either. The bulge on her back grows every single day. Some day it looks like it is breathing, like it’s a living thing destroying my child from within.
The pain is constant. We are afraid to hold her. She cries so much that her voice is weak and hoarse now. Drinking milk is a chore and we try to distract her, make her giggle with funny noises or songs, but nothing works. She doesn’t sleep and we stay up with her, desperate and distraught.
I work as a laborer in concrete, relying on the odd jobs I can find each week. A good month means we have enough to eat three meals a day. With Lavya's arrival, I hoped to take on more work in nearby towns, but constant hospital check-ups and late-night emergencies mean I need to stay as close to my family as possible.
My daughter needs me, and my family needs me. The more debt I take on, the more I worry about hurting their future. But we need money for her antibiotics and medicine. Her back needs to be cleaned three times a day to ease the pain from the cyst.
We have to move her every few hours to prevent bedsores as she is paralyzed from the waist down. My little girl feels helpless, burdened by a weight that pins her down. I feel helpless too but I can’t give up.
My first wife abandoned my son and me when we needed her the most. I raised my child on my own, determined to give him a better life. I wanted to be the father my children could rely on, the one who would always be there for them, no matter the challenges. With Babeeta and now Lavya’s arrival, I hoped to create a better home for my family but fate had other plans.
My Lavya lies on her side, dizzy and puking often. Doctors at Medista Hospital in Indore have suggested a surgery and a long ICU stay for our daughter’s recovery. I know that as a mere laborer I can’t arrange for these funds on my own. I can’t save my daughter without your help.
