I never imagined I would be writing something like this about my mother. My Mom, Sudha, is 57 years old and is now in the ICU of Star Hospitals, Nanakramguda, Hyderabad. For me, she has always been the heart of our family - the one who gave everything for us without ever thinking of herself. Today, she is lying unconscious, on a ventilator, fighting for her life, and all I can do is pray.
Mom has been living with kidney problems for over 12 years. She was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease and, 9 years ago, underwent a kidney transplant. Since then, she has been on daily medicines to protect her kidneys. She accepted it all with courage. She used to tell me, “As long as I can be around for you all, I can manage anything.”
But 3 weeks ago, everything changed. Her transplanted kidney failed, and dialysis had to be restarted. That dialysis gave her a severe infection that spread to her blood, causing septic shock. From there, her health started to deteriorate. Her liver has now failed, her skin and eyes are completely yellow with jaundice, her white blood cells are extremely high, and she cannot respond to us anymore.
On July 29, she stopped breathing on her own and had to be put on a ventilator through a tracheostomy. Normal dialysis isn’t possible for her, so she is on SLED dialysis, a slower form meant for weaker patients. She is on strong antibiotics, medicines to keep her blood pressure stable, and is fed through tubes. Nurses turn her often to prevent bed sores.
We have already spent everything: family savings, borrowings, and even pledged gold. The costs of ICU care, ventilators, dialysis, and medicines are far beyond what we can handle now.
