My mother Halima is the strongest person I know. For more than ten years she has been living with a tumor in her abdomen. It started small almost unnoticed but over time it grew bigger and heavier. Now it is so large that she can barely walk or sleep without pain. Watching her struggle breaks my heart every day.
Seven years ago after my mother’s illness became serious my father left us. He could not bear the burden of her sickness and abandoned our family. Since then it has been just my mother and us her two sons. I am seventeen and my younger brother is only fourteen. We both work hard. I do daily wage labor and my brother works as a waiter in a local biryani shop. Even with our efforts it is never enough.
My mother does not complain. She smiles at us and tells us to focus on our studies and work but I know she is in pain. She struggles with every step and nights are the worst when she cannot sleep. She needs urgent surgery but the cost is far beyond what we can afford. We have reached out everywhere but the money is just not there.
We feel helpless watching her suffer while we scramble to make ends meet. We want to save our mother. We want her to be well again, to walk without pain and to live a full life with us.
