Story

Objective: To SAVE Life of newborn babies who are born pre-term, Low birth weight (LBW) and grossly underweight babies.

Advantages of Human Milk versus Formula Milk

Breast milk is considered to be the best for the baby. There is strong evidence that human milk protects the babies from gut-associated problems like necrotizing enterocolitis (serious and life-threatening disease process involving the intestines). There is also sufficient evidence to prove that human milk-fed babies have better IQ than formula milk fed babies. Human milk also protects the babies from infections, allergy, and metabolic programming. Starting human milk early in small babies helps to establish full feeds faster, reduces risk of infection, reduces length of stay and the cost of neonatal intensive care stay.

According to a joint statement by the WHO and UNICEF: "The best food for a baby who cannot be breastfed is milk expressed from the mother's breast or from another healthy mother. The best food for any baby whose own mother's milk is not available is the breast milk of another healthy mother. Where it is not possible for the biological mother to breastfeed, the first alternative, if available, should be the use of human milk from other sources. Human milk banks should be made available in appropriate situations.

WHY HUMAN MILK BANK

1.       Describe the project you are fundraising for :

To SAVE Life of new born babies who are born pre-term, Low birth weight (LBW), grossly underweight babies, Mother with Post-partum  emergencies, abandoned neonate or motherless neonate etc who need to be fed Human Mother’s Milk,  our  ‘Freedom Human Milk Bank’ will come to their rescue

2.       Describe why it matters. What gap will it fill?

The best food for a baby who cannot be breastfed is milk expressed from the biological mother's breast or from another healthy mother.

Where it is not possible for the biological mother to breast feed, the first alternative, if available, should be the use of human milk from other sources.

Human Milk Banks should be made available in all MCHs where at least 100 deliveries per month are registered. Approx 2-3% of babies require Milk from HMB, and if not provided, such baby may die.

Precious life of such unfortunate babies can be saved.

3.       Why is it needed in your chosen location? How many people will benefit from the project?

In Navi Mumbai spread over 120 sq km, and a population of over 1.4 Million, there are more than 5000 recorded deliveries per month, and there are no HMBs here till date.

Hence, the urgent requirement of HMBs to cater to the community requirements

4.       Briefly describe how you plan to implement it.

Freedom4U has already identified a few premises/ local MCHs for implementing this program. First one shall be at MCH-Airoli, followed by MCH Nerul; the detailed proposal has been submitted and approval can be obtained anytime, once funds are arranged.

Current NMMC Commissioner and his team are also keen to bring this noble project for the first time in Navi Mumbai and replicate it in various MCHs all over Navi Mumbai. In most of the MCHs, there are over 200 deliveries every month in each of the MCHs and it is a MUST to have one HMB in every such MCH site so that precious lives of such unfortunate babies can be saved.

Breast milk satisfies all the needs of the baby in the first SIX months of life, ensuring optimum growth and development and mother infant bonding.  It protects the baby from infections and malnutrition in infancy and from other diseases in adulthood.  More importantly, breast milk is species specific and every component of milk is tailor made to suit the specific needs of the newborn baby. Scientific research has now appreciated the necessity of feeding breast milk to low birth weight, preterm and sick babies, because of its immunological and nutritive superiority.  A baby fed on any milk other than human milk is at risk of various complications like- neonatal sepsis, diarrhea, necrotizing enterocolitis, milk protein allergy, as well as the development of atopic disorders (allergy, asthma, and dermatitis) in later life.

A Human Milk Bank (HMB) milk bank caters to infants who do not get the milk from the mothers due to premature birth or medically unfit mothers or when the mother dies during childbirth.
As the incidence of low-birth weight babies and preterm babies is very high in India, it is imperative for the survival of these babies that constant and adequate supply of milk is guaranteed to them. An HMB can perform a motherly function in such a scenario. It acts as the most cost-effective strategy for overall improvement in neonatal care.
