As a parent, you would never imagine that your teen child would one day be struggling for their life. My son, Vedant Verma is just 13 years old but… he was diagnosed with Wilson’s disease and acute liver failure.
What troubles my son Vedant?
It began with persistent fever, sepsis and even seizure episodes.
Soon, it turned into liver dysfunction followed by fatigue, jaundice and abdominal swelling.
He faced neurological symptoms including tremors, difficulty in speaking, and an altered mental state
He also faced psychiatric symptoms such as mood swings or personality changes.
Wilson's disease is a rare genetic disorder that causes copper to build up in the body, damaging vital organs like the liver and brain.
In addition to liver failure, Vedant is suffering from a brain infection. His doctors have expressed concern that until the infection is addressed, there is little that can be done for his liver condition. This makes the situation very delicate and urgent.
What is the treatment required?
The doctors at Midas Multispeciality Hospital in Nagpur said that Vedant needs urgent treatment, including:
Chelating agents (like penicillamine or trientine) to remove excess copper from the body.
Zinc supplements to reduce copper absorption.
Liver transplant in case of acute liver failure or irreversible liver damage.
As of now, his health condition has not improved, and he has remained in a coma for about a month and on ventilator support.
Our bright young boy deserves a fighting chance of a future, to focus on his education. As parents, we are doing everything possible to save him. We have already spent ₹14–15 lakhs on his treatment, selling our jewellery and exhausting all our savings but the hospital bills continue to rise each day.
Both my wife and I work private jobs, but our modest income cannot cover the cost of Vedant’s prolonged ICU stay, ventilator care, and possible liver transplant in the future.
