Story

Dharamsala Animal Rescue

Our mission:

Dharamsala Animal Rescue (DAR) provides a humane environment for street dogs with direct benefits to the communities of Dharamsala, India. We work to end the human/street dog conflict through our programs: spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, rescue and adoption, and community education for rabies safety and compassion.

Dharamsala Animal Rescue has been running since 2009. Since that time, we have helped more than 16,500 animals. We also provide employment for 13 locals, many of whom would only be employed as day laborers, cleaning staff, or drivers. We provide a team environment where our staff is able to learn new skills, contribute ideas, and feel empowered. Staff that would normally be treated not well due to their caste in India, are considered heroes in the community. Dharamsala Animal Rescue is more than just an animal rescue, we are a development organization that works to make a world of difference for animals and people.

DAR focuses on four main programs designed to effectively to achieve our mission and goals:

ABC/AR (Animal Birth Control/Anti-Rabies)

- This program is a systematic approach to creating a rabies-free environment and controlling the population of strays humanely, following the World Health Organization (WHO) protocols. We conduct annual scientific population surveys, and mass rabies vaccination camps.

Rabies kills one person every 30 minutes in India.

Street Animal Rescue

This program provides an optimal environment for any small animal needing 24/7 care due to accidents, disease, cruelty, or abandonment.

Humane Education

– Our school program, “Animal Buddies,” teaches young children how to be kind to stray dogs even if they are scared of them. It also teaches kids and teachers what to do if they get bit by an unknown dog, so that they are safe from rabies.

Adoption

– We encourage local adoption. All potential families must go through an application process, approval, and follow up. We also adopt out adult dogs internationally to the USA and Canada.

This month, your gifts helped over 70 street dogs. One dog who you gave to is Chaya. Chaya was caught in a an illegal wire trap a farmer set in his fields to keep dogs and other animals from destroying his crops. This apparently is what is done to save food, you try to kill an animal. Luckily, Chaya was rescued in time but we did have to amputate her leg. But please know, it is only because of your gifts that a dog like Chaya has any future at all. Thank you for your continued support.

Another month of 2024 has gone by and our street dogs continue to suffer. But thanks to you, over 50 have been rescued. Many suffering from deep maggot wounds, broken bones, mange, and more. But none of them would have even had a chance if not for your generous gifts and kind hearts.

Thank you for always being there for them.

Thank you for all of your support this month and for coming through for DAR on Giving Tuesday

Just this week, we were catching dogs in one of the slums of Dharamsala in a village called Chaitru, where there are still many unsterilized dogs - also unvaccinated and not dewormed.

Your gift not only keeps future litters from suffering but gives the current strays a chance at a healthier life, AND prevents these children from contracting diseases such as rabies, roundworm, and hookworm.

Your generosity truly helps make our small community in northern India, a better place for dogs and people - and we cannot thank you enough.

With so much Gratitude,

Meet Jojo. He is only 2 months old. He was born on the street and no one wants to adopt him.

In fact, he was hit by a car and left to die. As you know, this is not a life for an innocent pup.

On Giving Tuesday, November 28th, we will be raising funds to do what we know is the best way to prevent future suffering for pups just like Jojo - mass spay/neuter.

Best of all, all gifts up to RS. 2,50,000 on Giving Tuesday will be matched, rupee for rupee, by SPCA International.

Just this week, while on a rescue call, we saw these pups - no mom in sight.

While there are many more street dog feeders, caretakers, and adopters than ever before, the majority of people still see puppies as nuisances and pests.

When we see a cute puppy, we just see the tragedy that is most likely to come; dumping, poisoning, illnesses, and road accidents.

Please spread the word by sharing this email and social posts about our matching donations on Giving Tuesday to help us end the cycle of suffering. Thank you for your never-ending support and trust. It means the world to us and all of the dogs of Dharamsala.

PS: You can even donate early and get matched!

Watch Bulbul's rescue video here: https://youtu.be/GLHViNCTJN0?si=gYox4amOv5nlGSZR

Thanks to your support this month, we were able to save dogs like Bulbul. She lives on a Tibetan college campus and is luckily fed and cared for, but even so, her life outside led to abuse. We believe someone threw a rock at her, resulting in our vet needing to remove her eye.

Without you she would not have survived.

In addition, we performed 69 ABC and we were also excited this month to relaunch our education program in schools. Here was 2 children have to say about our program:

We had a really hard month. Monsoon caused a lot of destruction in Himachal, including destroying a bridge right near our shelter. Our team work through harrowing conditions to rescue and care for street dogs suffering from mange, hit and runs, tick fevers, and of course, many many maggot wounds. Because of you animal lovers like you, we were able to give many a second chance at life. One of those dogs is Sandhya.

Thank you so much for supporting us for another month! This month we completed 96 sterilisations and rescued 34 dogs.

One dog still recovering is sweet Alpha. He came in with a huge maggot wound on his ear - a result of a dog fight. He is just the sweetest - and without you he would be no more.

We are trying to reach 1000 sterilsations by the end of the year and we have 278 to go. Only animal lovers like you can help to reduce the suffering.

Thank you so much for another month of support! We truly cannot do it without you, and neither could Saru. He was rescued this month after we were alerted that a homeless dog had a huge tumor on his throat. Our vet, Dr. Mukesh and team successfully removed the tumor, and after a few weeks of post op treatment, Saru is back to his happy playful self.

Here is his before and after photo:

And here he is with Dr. Mukesh all recovered:

The funds to take him from rescue to recovery was Rs 11,000. In addition to Saru, we have rescued 44 other dogs suffering from maggot wounds, care accidents, and more, while also completing 42 sterilizations for catch and release. Animal lovers like you are the only reason we exist. Please consider another donation to allow us to continue.

We can't thank you enough for your support. Because of you, we rescued little Rangeela.

His upper back had a massive hole, you could almost see the insides of the poor thing. (Warning: graphic content)

Our veterinarians cleaned up the wound, extracted about a thousand maggots and bandaged up his back.

He slept a lot and ate a little bit. The next day he was feeling much better. We named him Rangeela because of his
 #23 (30 Jun, 2022) <i style= - From Impactguru

Because of you, we were able to save dogs like Jovie who are victims of hit and runs. If not for you, she would have died on the road in extreme pain.

Thanks to you, we were able to rescue her, give her an emergency amputation, and give her a nice life with us. We are hoping within a few months she will be ready for adoption.

Thank you!

Thanks to your donations we were able to rescue 26 patients, perform 81 sterilization surgeries, provide 500 treatments, and vaccinated 98 dogs for rabies. One of our success stories is this sweet girl, Tweety. When we admitted this young lady with advanced, life-threatening mange, we appreciated her charm even when she was feeling so low. Tweety was treated with weekly medications and baths, good food, rest and lots of love.

Cured of mange, spayed and much healthier, meet beautiful Tweety now! Thank you for your support!

Jovie was admitted to DAR last year in July when she suffered from a femur fracture, after being hit by a car. She had a successful pinning surgery and was under treatment for months, with no signs of improvement.

Sadly, an amputation surgery was the only option left to prevent the spread of infection in one of her back legs. But look at Jovie now, a glowing, bright-eyed beauty!

All possible because of donations from amazing, caring people, most of whom will never meet her, each of whom had abundant love for life. Thank you so much

We rescued Delight after being hit by a vehicle. Shee luckily survived but was semi paralysed - she could not use his hind legs. After a month of love, rest, pain killers, and care, she began to walk again. She is also fully vaccinated and we are so grateful that she does not have to go back on the street. Most of our rescue do, because no one will adopt them.

But the same person who called us after finding Delight hurt on the road, decided to adopt her once she recovered so she never has to live on the street again!

Because of people like you, dreams come true for pups like Delight.

Please considering donating to allow us to keep doing this work.

In 2021, we rescued 153 dogs hit by vehicles. Mason was one of them. Your donations help us help dogs like Mason. He had a long recovery which included an amputation. Unlike 49 of the others, he survived. Thank you for giving these dogs a second chance at life. Mason will be up for adoption next week. You can look for his photos on our Instagram.

Thank you as always for all you do to help us help the voiceless.

Thanks to your donations we can help dogs like Zinnia.

We love sharing our hurt to healed updates and this gorgeous girl, Zinnia is doing much better now. She was rescued in November as she suffered from mange.

Daily medicated baths, essential feedings and love from her caregivers is the reason why Zinnia is feeling so much better. Her fur is growing back and her skin has become less itchy.

Thank you so much for helping heal beautiful Zinnia!
 #31 (16 Nov, 2021) <i style= - From Impactguru

Your donations help dogs like Arlo who are found on the street with huge maggot wounds.

Dogs like Arlo, if not rescued, will suffer long painful deaths, Maggots can consume an animal's tissue very quickly, especially on the back of the neck where a dog can't reach to clean the wound. Such wounds usually become fatal within just a couple of days!

Thanks to you, we have the funds to treat him - remove the maggots, clean and bandage Arlo's wound. It costs Rs 7900 including: Medications, vaccinations, sterilization and food & stay with us (almost 2 months) to him from rescue to recovery. Thank you for your support!
