Brighton Primary English School is located in Danilimda, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. This is a safe space of learning for 900 students, who don't otherwise have access to quality education. Over the years, children have developed interests including coding, photography, rapping and caring for the environment. The school provides a refuge for children to nurture their dreams and aspirations, despite difficult circumstances in the surroundings.
Mr. Sarfaraz Shaikh founded the school in 2012 when there were no English-medium schools in the area, with the hope to provide affordable English education to the kids of the community. We are a team of 30 teachers spread across pre-primary to grade 8. What motivates us is our students' drive towards serving their community, including running learning centers and creating educational opportunities for other children.
The livelihoods of our students' families depend on the informal sector. Due to the nationwide lock down, many who earn daily wages have been facing financial distress. Some are struggling to meet basic needs like food, gas and electricity. As a result, families have not been able to pay school fees to the administration.
Since March 16, schools in Gujarat have been shut due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The school has continued to pay salaries to all their teaching and non-teaching staff all through the lock down. We want to continue paying all salaries and keep the school running as the lock down lifts and school opens again. At this time, we need your help to keep the school afloat.
The national average of the dropout rate among children in India, before completing Grade 8, is 42%. Many children who become a part of the alarmingly high statistic are first-generation learners, like our students. Living in the city and paying the school fees is difficult as is but without earning daily wages, education becomes an uncertainty.
With the help you provide, we hope to not have to ask our students for school fee for the coming months, so they can continue to learn and flourish through this difficult time.
A contribution of Rs. 500 will help one child continue their education for one month.
Rs. 1500 will help three children.
Rs. 2500 will help five children and so on.
Any financial support is greatly appreciated.
