While in Chennai for her extensive tests before the liver transplant surgery Baby Samaira was admitted in the ICU on Thursday, 21st of Dec because of deteriorating health. The surgery has to be done as soon as possible, please support her by donating and making her Liver Transplant a possibility.

Story

Baby Samaira was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a disease of liver in which one or more bile ducts are abnormally narrow, blocked, or absent. Having prolonged jaundice for 45 days post birth, it was confirmed via LFT test that the baby has critical issues with her liver.

Early consultation with a local Paediatric Liver Specialist concluded that her parents should get a second opinion. They then went to Hyderabad and met one of the prestigious Gastroenterologist Doctor, who confirmed that baby Samaira has Biliary Atresia.

Post this diagnosis baby Samaria went through intensive Kasai Procedure when she was 52 days old. This is a procedure which can only be done within two months of birth and has a success rate of 33% to make liver functioning normal, 67% cases then go for liver transplant at some point. Kasai procedure involved making one of the/part of baby's intestine into the bile ducts. Surgery was expensive but parents managed the funds. Baby has been under observation, routine checkups and has had series of shots/injections of various antibiotics, vitamins, all this during her crucial early days of growth.

Unfortunately, Kasai Procedure didn't work for baby Samaira and her liver kept on deteriorating. She now requires a liver transplant. Cost of this transplant is approximately 22 to 25 lakh rupees. The transplant would be performed by Prof. Dr Mohamed Rela from Global Hospital Chennai, who is an Indian surgeon known for his expertise on liver transplantation and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery. He is considered the world's best liver transplant surgeon from King's College Hospital, London. He also has a record for performing a successful Liver Transplantation on a 5 day old baby who is now a 20 years old healthy grownup.

The transplant needs to be done in the next 30 days before her liver goes into complete failure. Parents are not able to manage funds this big, in the given timelines. So we have decided to raise funds for baby Samaira.

Your donation can give Baby Samaira, who is deeply jaundiced at the moment and has been in pain right after her birth, a silver lining of living a life which everyone hopes for their own kid to have.

Also, before you close this page and move on to the next post you should know that success rate of liver transplant in babies is 90%, this comes with good quality of life post surgery, giving them the very best second shot at life.
