Every time I look at my six-month-old baby’s face, I wonder whether things would have been any different had his father stepped up for him. Without any remorse, he abandoned his infant son and chose to never see him again.
The baby’s only fault was- he was born with a rare liver defect. I begged and pleaded with him but he refused to extend any help.
Somehow I managed to reach my mother’s house in Kolkata. Over the next few days, I took my son to multiple doctors who performed numerous tests on him. But no one could guarantee saving my baby. I even tried again to get in touch with my husband and explained to him how much we needed him, but all in vain.
Amidst all this, I had my family who firmly stood by me. My sister (Pooja) and my mother (Laxmi) left no stone unturned and did everything in their power to make sure my Piyush got timely treatment. The doctors in Kolkata advised us to go to Mumbai as his chances of surviving were better there. We traveled to Mumbai and admitted Piyush to Fortis Mulund on the 12th of August 2019.
The doctors pinpointed his liver defect as Biliary Atresia. A condition in which his liver hasn’t completely formed and is blocked. They immediately shifted him to the ICU. After having gone through so much and having traveled for miles, Piyush’s condition is now extremely critical and his abdomen is bloated. He needs an urgent liver transplant which will cost Rs. 20.5 lakh. The doctors have given us an ultimatum of seven days.
The two major hurdles that came up were, the search for a donor and financial help. Luckily, my mother (Piyush’s grandmother) is found to be a perfect donor match. However, Piyush is suffering from a liver infection since a week, for which he is being treated in the same hospital. We can go ahead with the transplant only when the infection has subsided.
We have spent whatever we had in these past six months. Our friends and family have helped us in whatever way they could, but the amount for his transplant is high. With not a single penny left now, I fear if I will be able to save my son in time. All I know is that we are all doing everything in our power but we are still falling short of funds.
My son is all I have left now. Every time he opens his eyes, I see his pain and I am choked to tears. But I know that with a little support, he’ll overcome this. And when he does, I will make sure that he gets a good education and grows up to become a liver specialist and save many lives, just like someone saved his.
Please help me save my only child. We will be extremely grateful. You can also share our story on Facebook and WhatsApp.
