Beginning of a nightmare
“After suffering 3 miscarriages, Aayush’s arrival was our greatest blessing. He completed our family. Although he was born prematurely, he was completely healthy at the time of birth. So, it was a complete shock when his health suddenly started to deteriorate.”
-Tirthraj Gupta, Aayush’s father
Three months after his birth in October 2017, Aayush received his third vaccine injection. Immediately afterwards, he began to lose his adorable charm and started developing symptoms which sent the family into a state of shock. His parents noticed that he was struggling to breathe and his facial skin had developed a bluish tint. He often came down with fever and cried uncontrollably, indicating that he was in a lot of pain. He was rushed to a local clinic, where the doctors told the parents that it was normal for a baby to have such symptoms after vaccination.
When his health continued to deteriorate further, he was admitted to the ICU ward at Wadia Hospital, Santacruz(Mumbai). In order to stabilize his condition, he was put on ventilator support for some time. The doctors ran a series of tests on him before reaching a conclusion that Aayush suffered from a rare immune disorder called Hyper IgM. Patients with Hyper-IgM syndrome are susceptible to recurrent and severe infections. In some cases, there is an increased risk of cancer as well.
“I have never seen my son look so feeble. He was such a happy baby when he was born. Sadly, the frequent trips to the hospital have made him cranky. I hope and pray his ordeal soon comes to an end.”
Since his diagnosis, Aayush has been in and out of the hospital several times. The doctors say that a stem cell transplant is the only way to cure him of the disorder. In the meanwhile, he needs to get an immunoglobin injection every 3 weeks. The cost of each injection is around Rs. 15,000. Tirthraj, Aayush’s father earns a meager Rs. 6000 per month by selling vegetables. As per the doctor’s estimate, the transplant and the post-op care would cost Rs. 22.5 lakh. However, Aayush’s ongoing treatment and expensive medication have crushed them financially. They have exhausted all the funds that they had arranged through friends, family and by selling the jewelry they had.
“We know that these dark days will soon be over. Aayush’s ill health keeps us up at night. We are just holding onto the hope that Aayush will soon be able to experience childhood just like other kids of his age.”
