Story

As the crisis around the Covid-19 pandemic grows, the livelihoods of a large number of families surviving on daily wages have been shaken up. In India, many offices have mandated work-from-home and the government has shut down malls, gyms, and other public places including the Government offices. Millions of workers who drive autos are hit hardly. Also, people engaged in other activities like construction activities and indulged in rag picking are worst hit. The lives of people in slums have become so uncertain with the sudden loss of their incomes.

For instance, there is around 50% drop in on-demand taxi rides since the last week, Tanveer Pasha, president of  Ola, Taxiforsure and Uber(OTU) Drivers and Owners Association, told the Business Todayon March 13.

Already these drivers struggle to make money after footing huge loan payments, insurance bills, and fuel costs. Now, their livelihoods are being put even more in jeopardy. Fear of being infected has already driven 5% of Bengaluru drivers working for ride-hailing platforms to leave for their hometowns, TechSci’s Sukriti Seth told Quartz. About 30% of the auto drivers take loans to buy their vehicles which cost between Rs 1.6 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh. And now their loan repaying capacity has been hit very hard. Auto drivers rarely have insurance and employment benefits.

In some cities like Nagpur, police crackdown led to seizure of around 270 autos as they were plying owing to their economic crisis. With such penal actions becoming more stringent in India’s fight against Covid – 19, the life of the poor auto drivers is not going to be easy.

With the current Nationwide lockdown announced by Honorable Prime Minister at 8PM on 24-03-2020, it’s a complete shutdown of the auto rides. They are now at the mercy of the national and state governments. The governments are trying to take a slew of measures to support them during this crisis by providing some ration.

We wish to stand with the Government during this Pandemic and take up some responsibility of reducing the economic crisis for the auto drivers in our area. We wish to support them monetarily for the loss of their livelihood and wish to assure them that the nation stands with them when they are halted. We recognize their efforts in moving the nation when there was no crisis. Now, its our turn to make their lives move on without much hiccups.

If we don’t provide them a safety net now, every one of them, their children and other dependents are in danger of falling below the poverty line.

How will your donations be used?

Once you select an amount to donate, all proceeds will be used in providing the monetary and in kind support to around 1000 auto drivers, rag pcikers and other daily wagers living in the slums in Kadapa and Kurnool Districts of Andhra Pradesh.

This is a 100% not for profit campaign, and we will disclose the use of proceeds in a financial transparency report sent to all contributors to the campaign.

Lets fight Corona.. Donate Ka ro na.

DEAR CORONAWARRIOR,

With the support of our friends and supporters from across the nation, we are able to serve the distressed people as far as Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

We have so far reached 1350 families across the states. Our friend Mr. Jechonia coordinated the provision of relief material to the students and daily wagers of North Eastern states stranded elswhere in cities like Pune, Chennai and Bengaluru.

Another friend, Ms. Chazat Lowang, an IRS officer, coordinated the distribution of relief material to the daily wager tribal families of Demaoli subdivision in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh. They expressed their gratitude in a letter which will make our day. Here it is -

Some glimpses of the support provided to the people of North East states -

We have provided them with ration and vegetables kits containing rice, atta, dal, eggs, oil, spices, onions, potatoes and green chilli.

Our beneficiaries have been provided with -

  • Construction Workers
  • Brick kiln workers
  • Migrant workers stranded due to loss of work
  • Women who have been working as housemaids
  • Elderly couple whose only source of income is oldage pension from the government.

The kits we have provided them will ensure their survival for two weeks.

We are now planning to extend our support to tribal families of Jharkhand. We are planning to provide them a kit which will help them survive for the next two weeks. It may cost us around Rs.1000/- per kit.

We wish to reach them in urgency and support them with all the possible relief that we can do.

As you have already donated, here are the ways to help us further:

  • Forward this email to your friends
  • Share this link among your contacts in WhatsApp as well as on your social media pages.
  • Pursue your friends to support at least one tribal family by making them contribute Rs.1000/- at least.

PS - We have been supplying ration for 2 weeks in the hope of reaching more distressed people quickly. We wish to replenish the ration if the lockdown is extended further.

Dear Friend and Change Maker,

With the immense support from you and people like you around, we are able to reach 500 distressed families.

Here are some glimpses of our relief distributiont -

We have provided them with ration and vegetables kits containing rice, atta, dal, rawa, oil, spices, onions, tomatoes and green chilli.

Our beneficiaries have been provided with -

  • Auto drivers who have been running the autos taken on daily rent
  • Women who have been working as housemaids

In the light of the news coming up that the lockdown may be extended for another two weeks, we are not certain about the sufficiency of the ration we have provided them. Also, we have still requests pending from 500 distressed families and stranded individuals from Arunachal Pradesh.

We wish to reach them in urgency and support them with all the possible relief that we can do.

Dear Friend,

As a part of our mission to reach distressed people anywhere in India, during this Covid19 crisis, we have reached Coimbatore in Tamilnadu.

We found many beggars, rag pickers, daily wagers and attendants in the government general hospital without a source for food as all the hotels are closed and the economic activity is ZERO owing to lockdown imposed until April 14th.

We are able to secure a Kitchen owner Mr. Abhilash here in Coimbatore and are now ensuring 200 meals to the distressed daily wagers across Coimbatore for the next 25 days.

Check out our volunteers at action -

This is all done with the support and contribution you have made. We are still looking for more support to help more such people across the states and we need your help in this regard. Please share this campaign among your friends and colleagues. Ask them to contribute whatever they can.

Even contribution as low as Rs.500 or Rs.1000 will help us feed many hungry souls waiting for someone. We could sense the satisfaction when Muthamma grabbed the food packet from our volunteer and consume it before our own eyes. We should feed such helpless. This is the least we can do now.

Join Us.

Dear Friend,

On the second day of our fundraiser, we identified the target population - who are in distress owing to loss of livelihood amidst this #Covid19 crisis. We came to know about a slum - Sundarayya Nagar in Proddutur of Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. This is populated by 100 families who derive their livelihood from rag picking, begging and driving autos. Our volunteers visited their houses in person and found the actual distress they are. Here are the snaps of the visit -

pic - father son duo sitting idle out of distress

Pic - women especially elderly are the most distressed.

pic - all they have this and no income until April 14.

You can see their plight in this video -

So, based on our field assessment, we decided to support them with ration which can help them tide over this crisis a little easier. We want to them to not go to bed without food.

We procured food items and took the permission of local police to distribute the food items to these families. Today, we have distributed the following items to 70+ families -

Rice - 5kg

Dal - 0.5kg

oil - 1kg

Atta - 1kg

Mirchi - 1kg

Onions - 2.5kg

Tomatoes - 2.5kg

This would help them survive for the next two weeks. Here are the glimpses of out distribution -

Friends, it does not stop at these 70 families. There are thousands of families who are in distress and we need to reach them before they suffer. With lockdown until April 14 th and the situation becoming grim day by day, we need to act swiftly and supply the necessities to them soon. So, I request you to please take the lead of sharing this campaign among your school friends, college friends and colleagues and get at least three of them donate to the cause. Please message them, talk to them on phone and request them personally so that they could get to know the actual ditress.

Discussion may lead to Donation.
