WHO ARE WE TALKING ABOUT & WHY?

Punal Lepcha, a 7-year old girl who lives in a Child Care Institute in Bojoghari, Sikkim as she is left behind by her parents and again by her guardians. Initially being left by her parents, she stayed at foster home for six months and then being founded by her guardians she was given to them until they dropped her back seeing her condition.

She is suffering from Cerebral Palsy.

She is being taken care at the orphan home by the care givers who has been taking her to the hospital and getting medications until 2015 at Siliguri and Sikkim. However, the doctor has failed to help her at such places due to lack of proper facilities. Also, the conditions of the orphan home is degrading and there are other children due to which they failed to get proper funds and checkup needed for the girl.

About CEREBRAL PALSY

Every case of cerebral palsy is unique to the individual. One person may have total paralysis and require constant care, while another with partial paralysis might have slight movement tremors but require little assistance.

CONDITION OF PUNAL LEPCHA

The condition of Punal developed since she was 5 years old. Her conditions developed with mild issues with muscle control, difficulty in speaking, intellectual disabilities while a normal child like her have normal intelligence. Her condition has now become so severe that her right side of the brain has completely turned black and on the left side of the brain some patches have stated to develop. She has swelling around the brain & tissues in spinal cord. She doesn’t remember anything she does. Little strain while she is eating, taking shower, timing shoes, wearing clothes makes her heart pound and shaking movements unstoppably.

HOW IS IT SEVERE?

The doctors report stating: PUNAL will hardly survive till 25 years of age.

She hasn’t received any proper medical care after 2015 because of lack of funds.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?

After getting the recent reports checked and consulting the doctor, it has been confirmed that Punal needs to be kept under 24-hours surveillance. She has to be looked after by the health care professionals who will identify the impairments, developing plan to tackle with the core disabilities.

She will be given regular therapy including:

Physical Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Recreation Therapy, Treatment for problems with eating & drooling.

During this course, surgery for spinal deformities might be needed.

She would also require assisted devices for impaired vision, hearing loss, drooling to help improve the condition.

The complete process is slow and might take  1-5 years or even more. But gradually, it will increase her surviving range.
