Children and young people from vulnerable backgrounds come from experiences of adversity. Adversity affects their ability to engage with the world, make healthy life choices and be successful. Adversity can be of many kinds – Abuse, Abandonment, war experiences, extreme poverty, poor care, poor nutrition and/or violence. Adversity affects the normal child development cycle. Have you ever see an infant jump out of the cradle and start running? Just like there is a sequence to an infant learning to crawl, learning to stand up, learning to walk and then run; social and emotional learning also has stages of development. When a child misses out on those sensitive periods when social and emotional learning happens, the child is always catching up to development. This is prominent and pronounced amongst children from vulnerable backgrounds.
At Dream a Dream, we believe that the 21st century provides an excellent opportunity to young people from vulnerable backgrounds to leap frog into a future without poverty in spite of not having access to good quality academic education. Young people who are able to adapt to this new, fast changing world through skills and abilities to think creatively, manage conflict, respond with empathy, work in teams, take initiative and be adaptable will be successful in this new world. The key to stem the damage from adversity and turn the curve towards normal child development is life skills. When children develop the ability to take initiative, solve problems, overcome difficulties, manage conflict, interact with each other and understand instructions – it helps them overcome adversity and build resilience. Hence, Life Skills are critical for children and young people from vulnerable backgrounds.
