Apne Aap Women’s Collective (AAWC) is an anti-trafficking organization that serves the women trafficked into brothel-based prostitution and children of Kamathipura, the red light area of Mumbai. By providing our members with the tools and resources to create a better quality of life, we empower women and prevent the cycle of inter-generational prostitution among their daughters. We operate three programs: Umeed for women in brothel-based prostitution (ages 18+), Udaan for their daughters (ages 5-18), and Umang for toddlers (ages 2.5-5 yrs). Over the years, AAWC has successfully worked with over 3000 women, 450 girls and 300 children.
The Umang Project
The Umang is the project for the toddlers (ages 2.5 to 5) to develop physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially in preparation for formal schooling.
The red light is wholly an unhealthy and unsuitable environment for children to be in. Children, from a young age witness to sexual acts and various illicit activities in the locality, are at a great risk of trafficking. They are often found unattended lurking on streets, gambling dens or used for drug peddling while their mothers solicit with clients. Moreover, they absorb sexual acts from openly seen X-rated movies. They are drugged and laid under the bed when their mothers are with clients. They are also at a risk of being physically or sexually abused by the community people around.
Apne Aap Women’s Collective is providing the services to all children between 2.5 years to 5 years through day care and night center under the Umang Project to help them develop physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally in preparation for formal schooling. The activities conducted are Education, Health - Physical and Mental, Nutrition, Shelter, Empowerment and Recreation to 60 children during the day and 25 children during the night for their care and protection.
From a team of two with 12 children 15 years ago, AAWC has now over 11 staff members, providing support services for over 60 children in the current year including Khetwadi and Kamathipura Center in Mumbai. AAWC has successfully worked with over 300 children; significant numbers have been successfully studying and completing their degrees in IT, Commerce & Arts and many more are pursuing their academic career in schools in Mumbai.
