Empower Urban Slums women through crocheting
Crocheting is a process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn, thread or strands of other materials using a crochet hook. The name is derived from the French term “crochet”, meaning small hook.
Our organisation has been working towards increasing the livelihood opportunities of underprivileged women and adolescent girls living in the urban slums of Delhi. One of the slums we have been working in is based out of South Delhi. Most of the inhabitants living in the slums are from Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh. Women residents living here had learnt the art of crocheting during their childhood. These women are mostly housewives but due to heavy household work and lack of resources, are unable to follow their passion. We thought of bringing the women together with similar passion and enthusiasm under one roof to rekindle their lost passion. Classes are held twice every week where the women get an opportunity to learn new make new products or brush up their techniques.
This project was started to help women living in the urban slums of Delhi to become economically independent. We have been imparting training to 15 women. The women have made hairclips, hair bands, mobile pouch, purse.
- Products made by the women will be sold and the money collected will be distributed among them.
- We want to make self help groups of the women which will provide them the opportunity to continue the work and sell.
The funds will largely be used to pay for the cost of the facilitator and community mobiliser for capacity building. Some amount has also been used to buy the resources such as wool and hooks which were needed for the project. A percentage has been allocated towards other admin costs in running this program.
Action for Excellence in Children and Women Foundation (AECWF), is an Indian non profit that works towards increasing livelihood opportunities for underprivileged girls and women living in urban slums. It does this by building appropriate skills for employability, income enhancement and entrepreneurship (by itself and or through partnerships with other organisations) and by providing access to decent secure jobs.
