ABOUT ASSOCIATION FOR SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Association for Sustainable Community Development (ASSCOD), a registered Non-Governmental Organization has been working to empower the rural women in social and economic aspects since 2000. We used Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) based our own development activities to empower the women in social and economic aspects.
About 70% of the school going children in the age group of 6-14 are anemic due to malnutrition. Because of Anemia, children easily get soared resulting in poor concentration in their studies.Children studying in Government run schools are from economically backward families and getting proper food itself is a challenge to them. So, getting balanced and nutritious diet is really a distant dream for them.Though the government is providing noon meal, still the children nutrition is not showing considerable Progress.
ASSCOD successfully implemented Anemia correction programmes using locally available nutrition items and integrated them with the noon meal centres in the Govt schools so as to improve haemoglobin levels of Anemic children besides providing dates. The anemic children were given nutritional supplements to correct anemia.
We implemented this programme in 2005-2006 in 6 Schools of Kancheepuram District of Tamilnadu and the programme impacted about 650 children. As the programme involved Indian System of Medicines techniques, the parents of the children learnt the techniques of addressing anemia so as to treat themselves. We plan to implement this programme again with an aim to impact another 500 anemic children this year onwards.
