Once when a young daughter of a woman in prostitution was asked about her goal in life, her innocent but shocking reply was that she wanted to be a brothel owner.
It was realized that some of the predominant causes for the girls (daughters of women in prostitution) entry into prostitution are social conditioning or normalization of being prostitutes, economic deprivation, religious tradition, and trafficking. This motivated AAWC to focus on prevention of the second generation or inter-generational cycle of prostitution.
Since the last 18 years AAWC is working with woman trafficked into brothel-based prostitution and their children in the Kamathipura Red Light area of Mumbai, and have effectively helped more than 400 of their daughters to break the cycle of prostitution.
The Udaan program (girls aged 5-18) aims at the holistic development of these girls by providing them a safe day and night shelter with various services, especially education. Along with education, life skills such as computers, English speaking, vocational training, painting & crafts are imparted to them at AAWC. Financial literacy sessions are also conducted to give them the better understanding of the importance of savings. Regular physical and mental health workshops on precautionary and preventive healthcare are conducted for these girls, with regular health check-up camps at the center.
While working on the holistic development of these girls through Udaan, many of them over the period have shown leadership skills or enthusiasm to do something worthy for their lives. From showing significant progress in education to securing good jobs at multinationals, the girls have set a path for becoming role models for other girls in the community. Amongst these Udaan beneficiaries, some of the girls not only have acted as role models but they also have helped their mothers to quit the profession and provide the alternative to live a life with dignity.
"The young girl who aspired to become a brothel owner in her childhood is now a chef in a five-star hotel in Mumbai".
This young girl amongst many others are setting the ideal example before rest of the girls in the red light community. You also can become a part of many future inspirational stories.Your donations this great cause will lead to make the lives of the girls more beautiful and free of the cycle of intergenerational prostitution.
