Blood Cancer (Leukemia) is not a lesser known disease in India. It has taken the lives of many people who either could not afford the expensive treatments or were not lucky enough for their cancer to be detected in the early stages. But, here we talk about a #SuccessStory that can change the way we look at Blood Cancer.
Little Sampriti was only two years old when her parents first found out she had Leukemia. The diagnosis was rather shocking and unexpected. Sampriti had a minor leg injury from a fall while she was playing with her friends.
They visited the local hospital to have the leg injury treated and dressed. It was at that time that a routine blood test revealed the horrifying news of blood cancer, more specifically Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Have a look at these statistics that confirm that Leukemia is the most prevalent form of pediatric cancer accounting for 1 out of 3 childhood cancer cases. So it’s safe to say that Sampriti is just one of many such children who is suffering this fate.
But there was one opportunity that struck Sampriti’s family and changed her life - the opportunity to afford her blood cancer treatment with ease, in a quick and debt-free manner.
Sampriti’s father, Bidyut, was informed about blood cancer treatment and the costs associated with it. His little girl would need a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy spanned over 2 years, that would amount to Rs 18 lakhs.
Surely Bidyut was taken aback to hear about the expenditure that would be incurred, considering that his savings from waiting tables at a restaurant wouldn’t even cover the bare minimum. But it didn’t matter.
What was important was that Sampriti received the best quality treatment by trusted doctors in reliable facilities. The family spared no time in packing up their things and moving to Mumbai, so that Sampriti’s treatment could commence as soon as possible at Nanavati Hospital.
For several weeks the family consolidated whatever income they could - personal savings, borrowing from friends and family, and sale of assets. But that wouldn’t suffice. After all, there were costs to cover over and above the 18 lakhs worth of treatment, including transport, accomodations, and their daily meals.
It was through a close friend that Bidyut was introduced to the concept of crowdfunding. He was told that you could start a fundraiser for Sampriti’s treatment and raise money online through a donation based system. Even though it seemed too good to be true, Bidyut took a leap of faith with nothing to lose, and started a fundraiser with Impact Guru.
You might be just as surprised as Bidyut was, when he realized 3 days into his campaign that he had already raised 14.3 lakhs! In a matter of only 3 days, all his financial trouble melted away, with no loans to repay, no debt, and no interest. He could now focus on his daughter, her treatment and her well being.
Cost of blood cancer treatment in India
While the success rate for blood cancer treatment in India is quite promising, we grapple with other challenges that prevent blood cancer related deaths. One of the most crucial issues is the high cost of treatment procedures like chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and bone marrow transplant.
A single session of chemotherapy may cost between Rs 30,000 - 40,000, while a cycle of radiotherapy would be anywhere between Rs 1,50,000 - 2,50,000. On the other hand a bone marrow transplant may go upto Rs 25,00,000 or higher.
It’s safe to say that with such high costs, even those who do have medical insurance may not be rescued. Besides, the fact remains that majority of the Indian population do not have the luxury to depend on medical insurances nor loans.
For this reason, crowdfunding has emerged as the most practical solution for affording expensive treatments in India, and in fact world over.
The Impact Guru team visited little Sampriti to find that her treatment is going well. And while we are incredibly happy for her family, it is disheartening to know that such miracles don’t happen to everyone. Not all families of those suffering from Leukemia have the funds to cover treatment, and not enough have tapped into the beauty of online fundraising for medical treatment.
India has the 3rd highest incidence of blood cancer worldwide, after USA and China. In India crowdfunding could potentially make a world of difference to the families that are currently going through the same thing that Sampriti’s family went through.
In the hope that Sampriti’s story will serve as a source of encouragement to such families, we hope that these tips below will help you create a successful fundraiser for yourself or a loved one.
How to fundraise for blood cancer treatment in India
Follow this step-by-step guide to ensure fundraising success.
Pick a suitable crowdfunding platform
There are several crowdfunding platforms in India. You need to pick one that suits your requirement the most - that is, to pick a crowdfunding platform that has sufficient experience with medical fundraising, and more specifically cancer fundraisers. Impact Guru is one such platform that has hosted several cancer fundraisers for families in need of financial support.
Set a realistic target amount
Your target amount can be determined by adding the expected cost of hospital bills, treatment procedures, oncologist’s fees, medications, diagnostic tests, post treatment/ postoperative care, transport, and accommodations.
Create a compelling campaign page
To create a truly compelling campaign, you must have a combination of an emotional campaign narrative, pictures and videos to accompany it, proof of medical treatment from your hospital (to build the donor’s trust), and a persuasive appeal for funds.
Gather your supporters
In order to build a community of supporters, you must first turn to your inner circle - your friends and family. Once you have their support and the donations start pouring in, it’s time to reach out to others.
You can reach out to cancer survivors, cancer aid communities, and other such groups that would make for potential donors. The best way to reach out to people is through Facebook, Whatsapp, Email, and other social media portals. But don’t forget to engage in word of mouth communications as well.
In addition, if you’re someone who’s raising funds for the improvement of blood cancer treatments such as research, awareness, facilities etc, you may even consider raising funds for a cancer fundraising event.
Should you ever find the need to raise funds for yourself or a loved one for blood cancer treatment, you can start a campaign with Impact Guru in less than 5 minutes. Our team will be there to support you throughout your fundraising journey.
