There’s a new drug for Alzheimer’s which supposedly reduces the symptoms of the disease. Read on to find out:
What is the new drug for Alzheimer’s?
In June, 2021 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first Alzheimer drug in nearly two decades. The drug- Aducanumab (brand name Aduhelm) was developed for people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s and was intended to slow the progression of the disease.
Due to the accelerated breakdown of neurons in the brain of a Alzheimer’s patient, plaque is formed. The drug is a monoclonal antibody that is designed to reduce the presence of amyloid beta, a protein that forms plaques in the brain.
How effective is the drug on patients?
According to the Indian Express, the drug has so far been tested on patients who were in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. It showed a positive effect in terms of reducing the presence of amyloid beta in patients.
There is still not enough data to ascertain whether the drug will have an effect on people with severe Alzheimer’s or on its side effects. Experts say that it all depends on how the drug performs in the phase 4 clinical trials.
What is the cost of the drug?
Biogen, the company that developed the drug has said that the cost would be $56,000 (over Rs 40 lakh) per year. However, experts in India say that it would take at least 1 or 2 years for the drug to be available in India. The drug will be administered every month through an intravenous injection or infusion.
