BLOOD… This five-letter word is probably one of the most important things in human beings' lives. After all, it flows throughout our body and is of utmost importance for the normal functioning of all our organs.

Many times, we hear doctors say that ‘due to excess loss of blood, we cannot save him/her’. This is how crucial blood is for human beings. Still, there are many people out there who are not aware of the importance of blood and its donation. Therefore, to raise awareness, WHO and the associated nations celebrate June 14 as World Blood Donor Day every year. This Day was created to:

  • raise global awareness of the need for unadulterated blood and blood products for transfusion;

  • highlight the vital contribution that voluntary, unpaid blood donors make to national health systems;

  • support national blood transfusion services, blood donor organisations and other NGOs in strengthening and expanding their blood donor programmes by bolstering national and local campaigns.

Importance of Blood and Blood Products

Blood and its associated products like blood cells (WBCs and RBCs), plasma, platelets, etc. are useful in numerous ways. Some examples of the same include:

  • effective management of women suffering from excessive bleeding during pregnancy and childbirth;

  • children suffering from severe anaemia due to malaria and malnutrition;

  • patients with blood and bone marrow disorders,

  • low haemoglobin related disorders and immune deficiency conditions;

  • victims of trauma,

  • disasters and accidents;

  • as well as patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures.

To ensure that everyone who needs blood transfusion has access to safe blood, all countries need voluntary, unpaid blood donors who donate blood regularly. To meet this objective, an effective blood donor programme is crucial during peacetime as well as during emergencies or disasters. At such times, there is a surge in demand for blood or when the normal operation of blood services is affected.

Objectives of World Blood Donor Day 2022

This year, the host of World Blood Donor Day is Mexico. The event will be celebrated in Mexico City at the National Blood Centre. The slogan for this year is “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives”. It intends to draw attention to the role that voluntary blood donors and their donations play in saving lives.

The objectives of this year’s campaign are to:

  • be grateful to the blood donors in the world and create wider public awareness of the need for regular, unpaid blood donation;

  • highlight the importance of committed, and regular blood donation to maintain adequate supplies and achieve universal and timely access to safe blood transfusions;

  • recognise and promote the values of voluntary, unpaid blood donation in strengthening community solidarity and social cohesion;

  • raise awareness of the need for continuous investment from governments to build a sustainable and resilient national blood system and increase collection from voluntary blood donors.

ImpactGuru’s Noble Initiative

There are many people in India who have blood related disorders like Thalassemia Major, blood cancer, etc., as well as people who have been involved in road accidents and have lost a lot of blood. To provide financial help to these people, there are crowdfunding platforms in India such as ImpactGuru, which help raise funds for patients through online fundraising. The concept of online crowdfunding has gained popularity over the past few years and has helped lakhs of people across the globe. Medical crowdfunding is collecting money contributed by a large audience on the Internet to pay for the patients’ treatment expenses.

What is GEM?

GEM simply stands for Giving Every Month. As the name suggests, this is an initiative started by ImpactGuru to raise monthly donations to help patients undergo treatment for critical illnesses, including but not limited to blood disorders. You can choose the amount you want to donate each month and it can be as small as Rs. 100 per month.

Your Contribution Matters

It’s only your involvement and support that will help to ensure greater impact for World Blood Donor Day 2022. It will also help increase recognition globally that giving blood is a life-saving act of solidarity and that services providing safe blood are an essential element of every health care system.
