Birthdays always have such powerful emotions attached to them. We have friends who excitedly (and adorably) plan their birthday months ahead; it’s truly an occasion and we’re all here for it! Then there are friends who keep it low-key, a few friends - perhaps a cat - while some might not really look forward to their birthdays at all. What’s common for most birthdays however, is that many of us use it as an opportunity for some good ol’ self-reflection. “What has changed in my life?” “How far have I come...” “Will I ever hear again from the school friend that I haven’t talked to in 6 years?” and “Did I turn off the gas stove?”
No matter our state of mind, birthdays remain a uniquely special occasion that come with the quiet affirmation of, “Hi world, I am here.” One way you can make your celebration special to you, whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, birthday-lover or birthday-shy is by starting a fundraiser. A birthday fundraiser gives you the chance to create your impact and have a memorable celebration that not only makes you and those who you are raising funds for - happy, but also, inspires your loved ones to support a cause that you are passionate about.

Birthday Fundraising And Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding is a powerful way to raise funds from a large number of people who support your cause by donating to your online fundraiser. A birthday fundraiser can be started for any cause, right from helping a patient pay their medical bills to providing COVID-19 patients with oxygen concentrators or even rescuing and treating injured animals around your locality. You can start a birthday fundraiser for any cause of your choice on ImpactGuru.
Once your fundraiser is verified and goes live, you can share it with your friends, family, peer groups, hobby groups and other members of your social circle.
Personal Cause Fundraising On ImpactGuru
Let’s hear from someone who has started a birthday fundraiser:
Nisha from Mumbai started a birthday fundraiser on ImpactGuru, a few months ago when she turned 25. Her fundraiser was nothing short of a success as it raised more than Rs 1.28 lakh to support 95 underprivileged people living in a sheltered home. Here are excerpts from our interview with Nisha where she describes her journey:
What inspired you to start a birthday fundraiser?
The pandemic has affected each one of us differently and in more ways than one. I had a deep sense of gratitude for what I was still blessed with. I have never had to worry about my next meal when many of whom I saw had to sleep hungry.
“I HAVE MY FAMILY RIGHT NEXT TO ME, WHILE MANY LOST THEIR PARENTS, & THE HARSH REALITY OF COVID ORPHANS CAME INTO EXISTENCE”
I have a respectable job; but we also have stories of firms laying off people, and cutting down salaries. I wanted to be that ray of hope for someone. I trusted my instincts to step up and do good. My 25th birthday was just around the corner and it was good enough for me to act on my instincts. I asked myself - ‘Nisha, do you want to have a normal birthday celebration like every time or would you want to make it memorable, special & unforgettable like never before? I got a chance & I used it well, I think!’
How and why did you pick a cause that you raised funds for?
Two sections of the society that were totally devastated amidst COVID-19 were the abandoned aged and underprivileged children. With the help of some kind-hearted & like-minded friends, I was able to find a beneficiary NGO that sheltered 95 underprivileged people of different age groups & backgrounds.
“OVER 40 DONORS JOINED HANDS ON MY BIRTHDAY INITIATIVE AND TOGETHER WE GARNERED SUPPORT OF OVER INR 1.25 LAKHS FOR THEM.”
How was the whole process?
Pretty smooth. The first thing I did was narrow down on the cause that’s close to my heart. I decided to go ahead with elderly welfare and support for underprivileged children as that struck a chord with me. What better than getting grandmas and grandpas to bless you on your birthday? What better than being the guiding light to little kids and playing a small part in bringing down their suffering? It was nothing less than a perfect birthday plan!
What was the reaction of your close friends, family?
My family, friends, & colleagues were pleasantly surprised with this sudden outburst of emotions in me to start a birthday fundraiser. I could have still helped people by donating; but starting a fundraiser was my passion project, it was special to me. That kind of impact cannot be measured, you know?
“LIKE THE AGE-OLD SAYING GOES - ALONE WE CAN DO SO LITTLE, TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH.
Many of them who couldn’t donate became the voice of my cause by sharing my fundraiser in their communities further.
What significant change or emotions did this evoke in you? How did you feel after the fundraiser?
The entire fundraising experience on the occasion of my birthday on ImpactGuru has made me realise that each one of us has great potential to bring about a world of difference to someone in need. The feeling is priceless, remains etched in your heart forever and when you take one step towards social change, you are in fact inspiring many others to follow suit.
“INR 500 TODAY CAN BE A PIZZA ON YOUR PLATE OR A RATION KIT FOR A POOR FAMILY OF 4 FOR A WEEK. IT’S ALL ABOUT A CHOICE.”
In the years to come, I look forward to reminiscing every moment from this birthday celebration.
Just like Nisha, here’s a story of two friends who started a birthday fundraiser together on ImpactGuru:
How Two Best Friends Teamed Up To Start A Birthday Fundraiser
Mayank and Shrija were looking forward to celebrating their 25th birthday by starting a birthday fundraiser. Mayank’s birthday was on the 26th of January while Shrija, who lived in the US, was celebrating hers on the 27th of January.
Mayank had come across Nanhikali, an NGO that supported the education of underprivileged young girls. Mayank and Shrija started the fundraiser a few days before their birthday; they had initially aimed to raise Rs 30,000. Within 3 days, the fundraiser crossed its goal amount and hence, they decided to set their new goal amount to Rs 75,000. Mayank handled the campaign in India while Shrija spread the word in the US. Their friends and family welcomed this idea and donated generously.
The birthday fundraiser ended after raising over Rs 79,000 which was enough to educate 24 underprivileged girls in India for a year! It’s safe to say that Mayank and Shrija will always cherish their 25th birthday celebration for the years to come!
The success stories mentioned above are a testament to the fact that a birthday fundraiser has the potential to make a huge impact.
